Calgary company hired to help rebuild High River

Employees of a show home in High River are evacuated in an unorthodox way.

CALGARY- The company that helped the Calgary Stampede open in time for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth will soon do the same for High River.

Calgary-based Tervita, which specializes in emergency responses and rebuilding, has been hired by the province to assist the town’s reconstruction efforts.

“Tervita will hit the ground running and provide immediate support to town staff where it is needed including community services such as waste removal,” said Rick Fraser, Associate Minister of Recovery and Reconstruction for High River.

The company’s six-month, $45 million contract will allow them time to develop a long-term plan with the town, and they will also execute services related to water and soil testing, demolition and potentially construct flood-protection measures.

High River’s mayor welcomes the move.

“This is exactly the kind of specialized help our residents need to get us headed in the right direction,” said Emile Blokland. “We’re committed to returning our community to its normal state.”

Along with repairing the Stampede grounds, Tervita also helped stabilize damaged rail lines near Canmore, Exshaw and Okotoks. The government says they are one of the only companies around with the expertise and resources to respond quickly to large recovery efforts, and also employ a number of High River residents.
