After months of controversy, the provincial government now says homeowners will not have to have smart meters installed if they don’t want them.

About 60,000 customers have resisted having the meters put in by BC Hydro.

Many people say they are concerned that wireless signals from the meters emit radiation.

The provincial government now says Hydro will consider putting in digital devices that don’t transmit the signals.

However, these new non-emitting meters may involve additional fees related to manual monitoring.

1.8 million smart meters have been installed since January, according to Hydro.
