TORONTO – Relief is in sight for GO Train commuters travelling in and out of the Greater Toronto Area.

Beginning June 29, frequency of service on the busy Lakeshore line for off-peak travel will now be every 30 minutes instead of the usual one hour.

“This significant increase of service is the result of years of careful planning and construction to expand service on this line,” wrote Metrolinx on its website.

The Ontario transportation agency cites infrastructure upgrades that began in 2006 as a major reason for this change, including purchasing rail corridor segments and improving the tracks on those lines.

“In 2009, we installed a third track on the Lakeshore West line between Port Credit and Oakville, and in 2012, we installed an additional fourth track between Mimico and Kipling Ave.,” said Metrolinx. “These track additions have given us extra flexibility to add more service and capacity.”

In addition to boosting rail transit times, GO Bus service in Durham Region will also be expanded on June 29.

To complement Durham Region Transit’s launch of its new drt PULSE bus service, which will operate along Hwy 2 between downtown Oshawa and the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, Metrolinx will reallocate some of its fleet to offer more express options for passengers travelling in and beyond the area.
