TORONTO – Hundreds of protesters helped stop a controversial abortion bill from being passed in Texas – but one senator’s filibuster captured social media by storm Tuesday night.
Democrat Sen. Wendy Davis spent most of the day staging an old-fashioned filibuster, attracting wide support, including a mention from President Barack Obama’s campaign Twitter account. Her Twitter following went from 1,200 in the morning to more than 20,000 by Tuesday night.
Had it been signed into law, the bill would have forced the closure of almost every abortion clinic in the state because it proposed that abortions be performed only at surgical centres.
After much back and forth, Republicans voted to end the filibuster minutes before midnight, but not before hashtag #StandWithWendy began to trend worldwide.
Here’s some of the reaction.
