Video: white powder in park sparked haz-mat scare

Bags of white powder left in a park sparked a hazardous material scare in East Kildonan Thursday.

Officials say a resident found the four one-litre bags of power — believed to be the chalk used to draw lines on sports fields — in the park near Gateway Rd. and McLeod Avenue late Thursday morning.

That sparked a major response from Winnipeg’s fire department, which deployed its hazardous material team and decontamination unit. Police were called in to block off streets, and shoppers at a nearby Super Store were kept out of the parking lot.

There were no injuries or illnesses, although some firefighters were briefly overcome by the heat.
