OSOYOOS — What began as a vehicle fire quickly spread up a hillside on Anarchist Mountain late Wednesday afternoon.
A semi-truck crashed when it lost control of its brakes coming down the mountain. It burst into flames and large plumes of smoke swallowed the hillside near the Spirit Ridge resort.
37 firefighters and two helicopters were on ground fighting the fire.
As a precaution, approximately 12 residences were informed that a voluntary evacuation alert was being issued. Houses located within the area deemed at risk were prepped for foam and gel applications.
Emergency officials say the fire spread quickly burning more than seven acres of the hillside before being brought under control. There was minimal fire activity this morning.
Witnesses say that without the quick action of the truck’s driver, the situation could have been worse.
Authorities say it doesn’t appear anyone was hurt in the accident and subsequent fire.
