Seasoned storm chaser Tim Samaras, his son Paul, as well as chaser Carl Young all died chasing the tornado that tore through the suburbs of Oklahoma City on Friday.

Twistex (Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in/near Tornadoes EXperiment), a group that Tim Samaras helped found, posted this update on their Facebook page.

According to Tim Samaras’s website, he has been chasing tornadoes for 30 years.

The last tweet from Tim was at 4:50 p.m. on Friday, just before the tornado struck.

The EF5 tornado caught many storm chasers by surprise on Friday, throwing storm chase vehicles, including a team from the U.S. Weather Channel.

Though it’s been a slow tornado season in the United States this year, the Oklahoma City area has seen several deadly tornadoes in the end of May.
