EDMONTON – Two Edmonton charities are receiving a big boost thanks, in part, to Oprah.
The newly amalgamated Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton, along with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation each received a cheque for $5,000.
Global’s Carole-Anne Devaney had the idea of getting an Oilers jersey specially-made for Oprah Winfrey when she visited our city in January.
The talk-show host was kind enough to sign it, and it then was auctioned off online by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation for $10,000.
“Having the opportunity to bridge media with sports within our community that we all participate in is actually really fun for us,” said Kelly Micetich, board president of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton. “It’s a really innovative way to fundraise and then to make a donation like this, is so appreciated and so much needed by the kids we work with.”
The Oilers Community Foundation says the Oprah jersey received one of the highest bids in the online charity auction’s history, second only to Ryan Nugent-Hopkin’s gloves.
