SASKATOON – A Saskatoon singer has apologized via Twitter for forgetting the words to the American national anthem at a 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup hockey game on Saturday.

Local musician Alexis Normand was chosen to kick off Saturday’s game with the singing of national anthems.

The nationally televised game took place in front of a crowd of 8,771 at Credit Union Centre (CUC) for a matchup between the Halifax Mooseheads and the Portland Winterhawks.

A few lines into the US anthem and Normand botched the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

After a short break to collect her thoughts, she retried and the Saskatoon crowd had to join in to rescue the singer and finish the American anthem.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Normand later posted on Twitter that she was deeply sorry and that she wished she’d had more time to learn the anthem.
