Kijiji rental scam suspect apprehended by police

SASKATOON – Police in Saskatchewan have captured a Kijiji rental scam suspect after a Canada-wide warrant was issued.

Jason Hartlen, 33, was arrested without incident by Regina police today.

Saskatoon police have received 25 complaints from people who attempted to rent a property from Hartlen in the 800 block of Kingsmere Boulevard.

All of the victims found the property listed on Kijiji.

The victims in Saskatoon who met with Hartlen were allegedly defrauded of approximately $1,000 each in damage deposits.

Saskatoon police said Hartlen was renting the apartment himself.

Hartlen will appear in Saskatoon provincial court early next week.

Police also said he has a history of fraud in B.C. and Alberta.

During Vancouver’s 2010 Olympics, it’s alleged he received $8,000 from the parents of an athlete to rent a house during the games. Police said he was gone with the money by the time the renters showed up.
