A Winnipeg couple is $17 million richer after winning the LOTTO 6/49 jackpot.

Bruce Willman and his wife, Monique won $17,026,623.50 on the Saturday, May 11th LOTTO 6/49 draw. They were presented the cheque Wednesday at a news conference in Winnipeg.

According to a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, the couple discovered the win on Sunday morning.

“After making Monique a Mother’s Day breakfast, Bruce decided to check the winning numbers online. He sat down at the table and went through the selections on the two $9 tickets he’d bought the previous day. The first ticket won nothing, but the first line of the second ticket made Bruce do a double-take,” says the WCLC.

Bruce double checked the ticket a lottery kiosk machine.  “It displayed a $17,026,623.50 win!”

The winning numbers were 2, 10, 16, 21, 24, 49.

The WCLC goes on to describe what Bruce did next:

“I called my son and asked him, ‘What are you doing?’” Bruce said. “He said he was driving and I told him, ‘Pull over, stop the car.” Their son, like most people who heard the news, did not believe it.
“I don’t know how many people told us off,” Monique said with a laugh.

The couple said they plan to put some money away, possibly buy some land and a few toys. But what they are most looking forward to is being able to give to people and causes near their hearts.
Bruce bought their lucky ticket on Saturday morning at the 7-Eleven Food Store at 404 Edison Avenue and said it may be his last. “I won’t buy another ticket,” he said with a giant smile. “I’ll let someone else win now.”
