Canadian Greg Snell a finalist for ‘Best Job in the World’

TORONTO — Canadian tour guide, blogger and photographer Greg Snell has been chosen one of three finalists for one of the “Best Jobs in the World.”

The Oshawa, Ont. native is up against Hsin Hsuan Hsieh of Taiwan and Nick Tilley of the U.S.  for the Wildlife Caretaker job in a global competition coordinated by Tourism Australia.

Snell, 27, will spend a week in South Australia for a series of challenges.

“I’m very excited,” he told Global News, via email, from Brazil. “My education, work experience and travels for the past nine years have fully qualified me for this job.”

The winner, who will be named on June 21, will spend six months caring for South Australia’s wildlife on Kangaroo Island and the Eyre Peninsula — and earn a salary package worth about $50,000.

“I am eager to start the next chapter of my story on Kangaroo Island,” said Snell, who has lived in Costa Rica, Aruba, Zanzibar, Ecuador and Argentina since leaving Canada — where he also lived in Golden, B.C. and Toronto. “Australia is at the top of my list of destinations to explore.”

The competition attracted entries from 330,000 people in 196 countries. Eighteen finalists — six groups of three — have been selected to compete for six different jobs.

Snell is the lone Canadian remaining in the competition.

“From the Canadian Rocky Mountains, I learned early on how to manager wildlife,” he said in his application video. “I’m a caretaker at heart.”

Snell is confident he’ll be the winner.

“I will bring my passion for life, travel, conservation, and storytelling to South Australia,” he told Global News. “I am the best candidate for the Best Job in the World.”
