ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The coast guard says it is working to plug two fuel leaks on a sunken ship off Newfoundland’s east coast.

The Manolis L. sank in Notre Dame Bay in January 1985 with more than 500 tonnes of intermediate fuel oil and diesel.

Fishermen became concerned when they spotted oil slicks near Change Islands a few weeks ago.

They want the fuel removed from the vessel, but the coast guard says the priority is stopping the leaks.

Bob Grant, a senior response officer, says plugging the leaks will be a dangerous and complex operation because the vessel is resting in more than 80 metres of water.

He says noisemakers are being used to keep seabirds away from the area.
