New website aims to help victims of cyberbullying

In the wake of the suicide of Nova Scotia teen Rehtaeh Parsons, a Winnipeg-based advocacy group is launching a new website aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

The site, NeedHelpNow.ca, was started by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection. It’s meant to be an informational hub for teens who have had sexual pictures put online and how to stop the spread of them.

The goal of the website, according to the CCCP, is to help teens gain control over the situation by giving them the information and support they need both on and offline and to tell them know that they are not alone.

“The site really is designed to talk to them about ways and strategies to get the content off the internet, how they deal with their peers, when they need to involve a safe adult,” said Signey Arnason, director of Cybertip.ca.

“When something’s gone too far and some important strategies for coping and managing through what is inevitably a difficult situation.”

Parsons’ family alleges the 17-year-old was bullied relentlessly after an image of her being sexually assaulted at a house party in November 2011 was circulated online. The RCMP said they looked into the allegations but concluded in consultation with Nova Scotia’s prosecution service there were insufficient grounds to lay charges.
