Fan Expo thrills comic book, sci-fi fans in Vancouver

Thousands of Lower Mainland fans of science fiction, fantasy and comic books are in heaven this weekend.

They are getting the chance to meet personally with the stars behind some of the most beloved characters ever to appear on the printed page as well as the big and small screens.

Fanexpo 2013 is taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre and runs until 5 p.m. Sunday.

From Lego art, to robots, it’s where fans of fantasy unite. An event like this wouldn’t be complete without tons of comic books.

One vendor says he sells to a lot of collectors, willing to pay top dollar, for rare items.

For example, a Spiderman comic book valued at almost $6,000.

“That’ll probably go by the end of the day,” he says.

Fans were also able to meet the man behind Spiderman, the comic book king himself, Stan Lee.

Visitors also had the opportunity to meet with TV legends, and movie stars, like Tia Carrere and Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin, who’s taking part in tomorrow’s Sun Run.

“Everywhere I go, I say I love the people, but, I love Canadians. I love how smart and thoughtful and kind Canadians are, and vancouver is so beautiful,” says Astin.

He’s just one of many star attractions.

There are of course other reasons why fans are here.

It’s a chance to escape reality, even only for a weekend.
