Peter Kelly reaches settlement over will with Thibeault heirs

HALIFAX – The former mayor of Halifax has reached a settlement with the heirs of a lifelong friend, months after being removed as executor of the woman’s estate.

A probate judge removed Peter Kelly as executor of Mary Thibeault’s estate last September at the request of five of her heirs.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Kelly has faced allegations that he mishandled funds in the estate, and admitted to “stumbles” in how he handed his duties as executor.

Details of the settlement reached with the heirs are confidential under the provincial Probate Act.

Court documents say Kelly returned $145,000 to Thibeault’s estate in March 2012.

As of October, Kelly had kept his five per cent inheritance and an additional $16,587.13, which he listed as the costs of disposing of the estate.
