Singer butchers Canadian anthem at Jays game

TORONTO – As the old saying goes, good thing spring training doesn’t really count. That’s what one singer should be telling himself.

Before the first pitch of a Grapefruit League matchup between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Houston Astros at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin on Wednesday, singer Jeff Fuller botched the Canadian anthem – a few times.

On the first attempt, Fuller made it through the first few verses of ‘O Canada’ before he began to mix up the lines.

With help from the fans, many of them sporting Jays jerseys and ball caps, Fuller tried again – with no luck.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Fuller also made a few mistakes while singing the American anthem but managed to complete the song before walking off the field.

“Poor guy, nowhere to hide,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said to the Canadian Press. “I admire him for sticking out there and doing it.”

Jays third baseman and fellow Canadian Brett Lawrie shared a laugh on Twitter.

“Ahah how bout the guy singing the national anthems today ?? Ahah woee boyy #AllJammedUpp”

A few fans booed Fuller’s attempt, but many clapped in support.

“We are too kind,” a fan can be overheard saying in a video posted on YouTube.

The Astros were not so kind to the Boys of Summer, as Houston hammered Toronto 10-1.
