Amazon to investigate reports temporary staff in Germany were mistreated

BERLIN – Online retailer Amazon says it will investigate reports that temporary staff at its logistics centres in Germany were subjected to a climate of intimidation.

A documentary aired Wednesday by German public television station ARD showed dozens of staff hired by temp agencies on Amazon’s behalf complaining of grim conditions.

Some told ARD they had to work 15 days at a stretch, were paid less than promised and intimidated by security staff wearing clothes linked to Germany’s neo-Nazi scene.

Amazon spokeswoman Ulrike Stoecker told The Associated Press in an email Thursday that the company “tolerates no discrimination or intimidation” and would investigate the allegations.

The German union ver.di says Amazon workers have for years complained of intense pressure, random searches and short breaks.
