‘Quiet Zones’ will give GO Transit riders peace of ride

TORONTO – GO Transit will test-pilot designated Quiet Zones on its Barrie line trains this month, according to a post on the official GO Transit website.

“As part of our Passenger Charter, we promise to make your experience comfortable. You told us that would like a quiet area on the train and we listened,” reads a message on the website.

Beginning Feb. 11, the top level of cars on the majority of Barrie line trains will be designated Quiet Zones (the southbound 808 7:22 a.m. trip from Barrie and the northbound 807 5:35 p.m. trip from Union Station will be exempt).

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Signs indicating the proposed haven from obnoxious music lovers and transit talkers will be posted around the Quiet Zone. Passengers who need to make a phone call are asked to walk down to another coach.

Anticipating commuter confrontations, GO Transit advises Quiet Zone passengers who find their tranquility interrupted by boisterous riders to “quietly and politely ask them to keep noise levels down.”

The Quiet Zone will not be actively enforced by GO Transit staff. Riders should not trigger alarms in response to loud passengers; trains delayed for this reason will be ineligible for the GO Train Service Guarantee.

The Quiet Zone may also be suspended in exceptional circumstances, such as delays or bad weather. All regular announcements will be audible in the Quiet Zone.
