Sentencing hearing for second person in Leflar trial begins
An emotional day for Hannah Leflar’s family, as they head back to court for the sentencing of her second killer. Taking the stand today: an ex-girlfriend and co-murderer. Jules Knox has the details – Sep 18, 2017

The youth who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Hannah Leflar was in court Monday for his sentencing hearing. The Crown is seeking an adult sentence for this youth. His name is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The youth was with Skylar Prockner when he murdered Hannah Leflar in January 2015. Prockner was sentenced as an adult to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 10 years, a sentence he is now appealing.

According to an agreed statement of facts between the Crown prosecutor and defense lawyer, the youth followed Prockner out of Hannah Leflar’s home after Prockner stabbed her to death. The Crown said the youth could have chosen to intervene, but did not.

After the killing, Prockner and the youth went to a friend’s house for a short time, then to the hospital because Prockner had hurt his hand during the stabbing and needed stitches.

The friend took the stand Monday, testifying that both Prockner and the youth seemed in shock when they arrived at her home after the murder.

The youth did not tell the friend about the murder until later that evening. She didn’t tell police right away, saying she believes the traumatic experience was blocked from her brain. She didn’t go to school the day after learning about the murder.

During cross-examination, the defence suggested the witness’ memory had faded after two years. The witness agreed.

The sentencing hearing will continue this afternoon.
