A small town family has been devastated following a dog attack that killed a six-year-old boy. It all happened yesterday in Riceton -- a tiny hamlet of about 65 people 40 minutes southeast of Regina. Jules Knox reports – Sep 14, 2017

A six-year-old boy is dead after being mauled by dogs at his grandparents’ house in Riceton, Sask. on Wednesday evening.

Family described Cameron Mushanski as the light of their life — a bubbly, smiley kid who loved the video game Minecraft. He had just lost his two front teeth last week and was excited for a visit from the tooth fairy.

“He was our pride and joy. Every day with him, watching him grow and discover things, and the things he got excited about. To see the wonder in his face,” Cameron’s grandfather Dan Trelnuk said.

“He was just the type of kid to walk into the room, and he literally lit the room up. He was everything,” Cassandra Demery, Cameron’s aunt, said.

The boy lived with his grandparents, who had rescued the two Alaskan Malamute dogs from Alberta a couple of years ago. Cameron wasn’t allowed to be near their pen and had never gone near it before, Trelnuk said.

“It was the same routine we’d had every day: he’d get home from school at four, come inside, play a bit inside,” Trelnuk said.

“And then he got up and said ‘I’m going to go play outside.’ I saw him playing with his toys by the swing, bouncing on the trampoline. I didn’t hear anything,” he said.

“And then when my wife got home, he normally runs up to the car,” he said.

When he didn’t greet her, the couple went looking for their grandson.

“We lost the light of our life,” Trelnuk said.

RCMP is currently investigating the circumstances of the attack. It is still unclear if one or both dogs were involved.

Two large breed Alaskan Malamute dogs were seized at the scene. At the request of the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, they were euthanized Thursday morning.

“It’d be speculative at this time to actually comment on [potential charges], we’re early on in the investigation. We just have to let the investigation go forward,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Embree.

The family has set-up a GoFundMe page to try and raise funds for the boy’s funeral.

Cameron had just started Grade 1 at Milestone Elementary School. The Prairie Valley School Division declined to comment on the death of the child or whether any services will be provided to the students.

“I’d give anything to have one more day with that kid. To hear ‘I love you auntie, I’ll see you tomorrow,’ or ‘I’ll see you next week.’ Anything,” Demery said.
