‘A great kid’: Neighbour mourns loss of West Kelowna homicide victim

UPDATE: West Kelowna RCMP confirm the victim is a 27-year-old man from West Kelowna, who is known to police and believed to have had a ‘high-risk’ lifestyle. They are looking for a white Volkswagen, possibly a Jetta, in connection with the homicide.

A neighbour who knew the victim of Friday night’s homicide in West Kelowna describes him as a “great kid” from a good family.

Jason Provencher said he is still shaken after the victim was gunned down in a West Kelowna driveway across the street from his home.

Witnesses reported hearing two gunshots ring out around 8:15 p.m. in the 3400-block of McTaggart Road.

Provencher said the victim had just pulled into his parent’s driveway and was driving a black GMC Yukon.

“On the driver’s side, two bullet holes, one on top of the other, the window wasn’t smashed out, and just some blood on the driver’s side window,” he said.

Forensic investigators were on scene Saturday afternoon to dust for fingerprints and collect evidence.

At least 10 evidence markers littered the driveway and a cluster surrounded a treadmark and possible foot prints.

The two-storey home is still surrounded by yellow police tape.

Residents described the Glenrosa area as a quiet family neighbourhood.

Neighbours who spoke to Global News said while there’s been a rash of break and enters recently, this level of violence is unheard of.

“We walk our dog and kids down this road all the time, for it to happen right there, it is definitely shocking,” said neighbour Josh Hines.

“My nine year old daughter was very frightened, didn’t want to go to sleep last night,” said neighbour Tom Sylvester. “She plays right next door to the house where the incident happened with another little girl and they’re horrified.”

Provencher said the victim was a web designer in his mid-to-late 20s who was engaged to be married.

Provencher said the victim lived in the Lower Mainland but was in West Kelowna to visit family.

Police have not confirmed if the shooting is related to the drug trade or gang activity.

RCMP are not releasing the name of the deceased victim.

No arrests have been made.
