Sault Ste. Marie border bridge closed after replica grenade found in vehicle

The bridge linking Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. with its namesake in Michigan was closed to traffic Sunday afternoon after a “small potentially explosive device” was found in a vehicle.

Sault Ste. Marie police were called to the International Bridge at around 2:20 p.m. after CBSA officers located the device, while conducting a secondary search of a vehicle. The bridge was promptly evacuated, with police urging the public to stay away from the area.

Officers with the Explosives Disposal Unit assessed the suspect object and found it to be an inert replica grenade.

Police said there is “no immediate threat to public safety, and that the bridge is set to reopen to traffic shortly. An investigation is set to follow.
