As we head into the Easter long weekend, here’s what you need to know.
Transportation and road closures
- HSR is operating on a holiday schedule on Friday.
- GO Transit is operating on a Sunday schedule on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
- DARTS is running on a holiday schedule (6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.) for Friday and Monday. Subscription trips are cancelled and passengers will have to make a reservation in advance on these days.
- On Friday, Trinity Road is closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Wilson Street to Book Road) for a Hamilton Cycling Club Good Friday Road Race. Check out the route here.

Government services
Most, if not all, government-related services are cancelled on Good Friday. Monday, while not an official holiday in Ontario, is a day off for most public servants.
- Federal, provincial and municipal government offices will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. This includes Service Canada and Service Ontario outlets.
- Canada Post mail collection and delivery is cancelled for Friday and Monday.
- If Friday is your garbage/recycling day, pickup will occur on Saturday.
- All Hamilton Public Library branches will be closed on Friday, Sunday and Monday.
- Hamilton civic museums are closed on Friday and Monday
- All recreation centres in the city will be closed on Friday and Sunday. More details on the city’s website. Senior Centres and arenas are closed on Friday and Monday. Seniors Clubs are operating on a modified schedule.
- The Animal Services Shelter is closed from Friday through Monday.
Shopping and entertainment
Banks, grocery stores and many other retail businesses will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
- LCBO locations are closed on Friday and Sunday, and some stores are closed on Monday. (Call before you go — 300 stores will open with modified hours of operation on Monday.)
- Beer Store locations are open normal hours on Monday, bu closed Friday and Sunday.
- The Hamilton Farmers’ Market is closed on Friday and re-opening Saturday.
- Eastgate Square, CF Lime Ridge and Jackson Square are closed on Friday and Sunday.
- Movie theatres generally stay open on holidays.
