11th Annual Sirens for Life Campaign underway in Lethbridge

Lethbridge – First responders in Lethbridge are getting competitive in this year’s annual “Sirens For Life” campaign.

The annual blood donor challenge has Lethbridge Regional Police, RCMP and Lethbridge Fire and EMS competing to see who can contribute the most donations.

This year their goal is to save 911 lives, an easy number to remember.

“It is what we all think of when the word emergency is used,” says Shamus Neeson with Canadian Blood Services. “We want to save 911 lives, that’s just over 300 donations. One donation can save three lives.”

The campaign has been running for 11 years as part of the Ultimate Blood Battle Of Alberta.

Last year, the Lethbridge Regional Police won the “Sirens for Life” title, but this year the Firemen are hoping to snag it.

“Everyone loves a firefighter right? Well that’s what we are hoping anyways,” says Dana Terry with the Lethbridge Fire Department.

Demand for blood is quite high in the New Year. People are out of the habit of donating, and this campaign acts as a great reminder.

Since the inception of the campaign in 2003, it’s brought in over 82,000 donations during the month of January.
