TORONTO – Toronto police have laid new murder charges in a brazen street shooting this summer that left two people dead.
Staff Insp. Greg McLane says a man previously charged in the shooting now faces additional counts, including second-degree murder.
Two people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded when shots rang out at a block party outside a public housing complex on Danzig Street in the city’s east-end in July.
McLane says a snub at the barbecue touched off the deadly violence between rival members of the Galloway Boys and Malvern Crew gangs.
He says 19-year-old Nahom Tsegazab (ZIG-a-zab) has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and 22 counts of aggravated assault.
Two weeks ago, 18-year-old Shaquan Mesquito became the first person charged with murder in the case.
He stands accused of two counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault.
McLane said Tsegazab – who was injured in the shooting – appeared in court today.
Tsegazab was charged earlier this year with reckless discharge of a firearm.
He also said one of two people sought in the incident has been identified after police released composite images.
The investigation has led police to believe that there may be one or two additional shooters who were involved in the incident.
McLane, who declined to go into details on the investigation, said more charges are likely coming.
“We continue to move forward with our investigation. It’s clear to me and my investigators that there are people out there who have information that have not yet come forward,” McLane said.
“It’s crucial for our investigation to have them come forward and assist us in connecting some of the dots on what transpired.”
