A water pipe burst in a condo complex in southwest Calgary Wednesday, flooding six units and sending the residents scrambling for alternate accommodations.
It happened at the Evergreen West Pointe of View condo complex at 2395 Eversyde Way S.W.
“It’s Christmas-time…some people may have already left the city for the holidays and now they are going to come home and find that their home has been damaged,” said Robert Chaskavich of the condo board. “And the rest have to find somewhere else to live in the short-term.”
EMS took away an elderly resident in medical distress. Her condo was one of the units damaged by the water.
The Calgary Fire Department responded to a call just after 10 a.m. Wednesday. They turned off the water supply and mopped up some of the flooding.
The cause is still under investigation.
The CFD is reminding residents that cold temperatures can burst water pipes.
“We are stressing residents should be aware, obviously, that any open windows or open doors with the temperatures the way they are could cause pipes within the walls to freeze,” Acting District Chief Bruce Barrs said. “As you can see here, there’s subsequent water damage.”
The cost of the damage is still being calculated. Restoration crews were expected to be on scene for the next few days cleaning up.
It’s expected some of the condos will need to be repaired by construction crews after the cleanup.
The condo board says it’s working with the residents to try to help them find alternate accommodations in the meantime.
