Train carrying potash derails near Craven, Sask.

A freight train hauling potash derailed Friday morning near Craven, Sask.

According to CP Rail, at approximately 8:20 a.m. CT, the train ran off the tracks in the Rural Municipality of Longlaketon, Sask., in the Qu’Appelle Valley, northwest of Regina.

The company said the initial assessment indicates that 26 cars carrying potash derailed. It was later confirmed that a total of 23 cars derailed.

CP Rail said there were no injuries to the crew and no public safety concerns. No dangerous goods were involved.

“CP takes this incident extremely seriously,” Marin Cej, assistant vice-president, public affairs and communications, said in a statement.

“Once the derailment occurred, CP immediately enacted its emergency response processes to get teams and equipment to the site.”

The track was on the slope beside Last Mountain Lake but Cej said none of the train’s cars or the potash went into the lake.

Lumsden RCMP said they were called to the derailment Friday morning. The train did not block any public roadways and RCMP have left the scene.

Cej said the incident is under investigation and a cleanup will occur.

“A small amount of potash did spill,” Cej said.
