Days before Remembrance Day, Canada’s oldest highland regiment, the Black Watch armoury, was defaced with spray paint.

An anarchy symbol was drawn on the building in addition to some other spray paint. The doors and the historic plaque were the targets of the defacement.

“It’s very unfortunate that someone would have stooped to that level to do that,” Sterling Downey, Verdun city councillor, said. “Whether we’re anti-war or not, these are places that we have to respect.”

The armoury is currently closed to the public for renovations not related to the incident.

It’s unclear when the armoury was defaced, but it was noticed on Thursday.

“We have to educate people about that history,” Downey said. “It shows that there’s been a huge loss and connection with certain generations about the sacrifices that a lot of these men and women made in the first and second world war.”
