Even the most experienced animal cruelty investigators admit they’re shocked by the level of violence involving the random killing of farm animals by a stranger.

“You think you’re living a different kind of lifestyle where you’re safe and your animals are too,” said farm owner, Barbara, not her real name.

Barbara doesn’t feel safe on her acreage after what happened last week. What happened was a slaughter.

It was last Wednesday night when someone came onto the property and killed more than a dozen of her farm animals including a goat. Its neck was slashed.

“It was a knife straight in the throat,” Barbara said.

Several ducks were also slaughtered.

“Two of them in here had rocks beside their heads. Their heads were smashed. They had necks rung. One of the ducks was barely alive. We had to put him out of his misery,” said Barbara.

The killing continued here in the chicken coup where more than a dozen were killed.

Kathy Woodward is a animal cruelty officer with the BCSPCA. She’s dealt with a lot of animal cruelty cases in her day, but admits she’s shocked by the level of violence and the numbers involved in this one.

“I absolutely am. That’s a lot of animals and I would think it would make a lot of noise — that people would have been aware,” said Woodward.

The answer to why no one heard a noise — Barbara says it was raining heavily at the time. Meantime, she and her family remain on edge as Kelowna RCMP and the SPCA try to crack this case.

“Very disturbing, very disturbing and make us feel very unsafe. We’ve had many sleepless nights since,” said Barbara.
