Friends and family will gather in Surrey Friday evening to remember the life of the 15-year-old boy who lost his life during the first of three powerful storms that hit B.C.’s south coast last week.
While the storm never lived up to its full potential, it still caused some damage in parts of the Lower Mainland. At one point, it left 190,000 people without power.

During the first storm on Oct. 14, Shakir Salaam was killed by a falling tree in a wooded area near Clayton Heights Secondary.
At around 2:30 p.m., as the winds were picking up, the tree fell on Salaam and pinned him in an area, some distance from the marked path, known as a popular hangout for students.
Salaam was taken to hospital but passed away from his injuries.
City staff said the area would not be regularly inspected because it is so deep in the woods. Still, they said the tree looked healthy and if not for the storm, it likely would not have fallen.

Salaam has been remembered as a beloved brother, friend and rugby player.
A candlelight vigil will be held in his memory at Clayton Heights Secondary at 7 p.m. Friday evening.
