A Surrey family is planning a funeral for a teenager killed in Friday’s wind storm.

Shakir Salaam was fatally struck by a falling tree in a wooded area near Clayton Heights Secondary around 2:30 p.m.

Surrey Fire Department said Salaam was transported to hospital and the Surrey School District confirmed he later died of his injuries.

Surrey RCMP said the tree pinned him down but the fire department was able to extract him. The RCMP Youth Section will be investigating the incident in partnership with the BC Coroner’s Service.

Doug Strachan of the The Surrey School District said they are working to ensure there is support for students dealing with this “shocking and terribly tragic” event.

A makeshift memorial to honour Salaam was set up at the school.
