The westbound express lanes of Highway 401 are closed at Whites Road near Pickering east of Toronto after a tractor-trailer hauling fish caught fire early Thursday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say the single-vehicle crash happened around 4 a.m..

Images from the scene show the back-end of the vehicle engulfed in flames as fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

Police say the driver made it out safely and no other vehicles were involved.

The fire was put out shortly after 5 a.m. but crews remain on scene to clear the debris.

OPP say the driver of the tractor-trailer has been charged with careless driving.

Police say they hope to have the cleanup of the westbound express lanes complete by 1 p.m..
