The city has announced plans to invest $213 million to make Montreal’s metro system more universally accessible by 2022.
Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre made the announcement at a press conference Tuesday morning, alongside Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) president Philippe Schnobb.
“In 2015, we made a commitment, as an organization, to improve our clientele’s experience in regards to their daily commute, and necessarily, that entails better accessibility to our subway system,” Schnobb said in a written statement.
There are currently 10 stations equipped with elevators. The hope is to bump that number up to 31 by 2022 and have the whole network retrofitted with elevators by 2038.
The first two stations to benefit from the new program will be Jean-Talon on the blue line and Jean-Drapeau on the yellow line. Both stations are expected to be operational by 2019.
Both the provincial and federal governments will be contributing to the program, with costs split down the middle.
