Alec Baldwin debuts his ‘Donald Trump’ in SNL season premiere

In true Saturday Night Live tradition, SNL dove right into political commentary with a parody of this past week’s presidential debate.

Alec Baldwin was nearly unrecognizable as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, while SNL regulars Kate McKinnon and Michael Che played Trump rival Hillary Clinton and debate moderator Lester Holt respectively.

Baldwin played up all the memorable moments from the debate; he yelled “wrong” multiple times, brought up Rosie O’Donnell, and could be heard sniffling loudly into the microphone (though he blamed it on his rival).

He also answered his first question saying “I won the debate, I stayed calm, and it is over.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

When he was told by Che that he had to stay longer he immediately blamed the microphone for being faulty, like Trump did directly after the televised event.

When asked to respond to Trump’s claim, McKinnon offered a confident: “I think I’m going to be president.”

McKinnon also delivered all of Clinton’s notable moments from Monday, including her now infamous shoulder-shake and her accusation that Trump’s tax plan was “Trumped-up, trickle-down economics.”

Baldwin is expected to play Trump throughout the rest of the election cycle.

Margot Robbie hosted the 42nd season opener and she didn’t shy away from political humour either.

She fact-checked her own opening monologue live — a parody of Clinton’s debate night fact-checking website — and played a convincing Ivanka Trump in a Trump vs. Clinton Family Feud sketch.
