KELOWNA – A woman charged with trying to kill her husband will not be prosecuted because of her mental illness.

The attack happened April 18th at their home on Highway 33 on the eastern outskirts of Kelowna.

The 70-year-old victim was sleeping when he was stabbed multiple times, suffering serious injuries.

Christine Eve Haynes, 58, was subdued by other family members until police arrived.

Haynes was arrested for aggravated assault but the charge was later upgraded to attempted murder.

After reviewing the results of a psychiatric evaluation, a judge has ruled Haynes is not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder.

She will be treated at a secure psychiatric institution until well enough to be released.
