The city of Medicine Hat continues to crack down on its rat problem.
On Tuesday, staff destroyed an 80-metre long rat nesting site that was discovered at a landfill.
It took 21 workers six hours to dismantle the den, and no live rats were found.
The manager of solid waste utility said despite that, ongoing monitoring is needed.
“They could re-establish back in that area, so we have to continue to monitor and continue with baiting,” said Ed Jollymore.
“We’ll follow proven Alberta protocols that have been in use for the last 50 years, and will go back being rat-free. It’s just going to take continued vigilance, support from the public, and support from all levels of government to make it happen.”
Back in August, more than 50 rats were trapped and killed in the landfill, putting Alberta’s rat-free status in jeopardy. Officials are still trying to determine where the rats came from.
