The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has relieved two officers of their duties and placed two others on administrative duties as an investigation of possible misconduct is conducted.
In a news release Saturday, CPS said the criminal investigation stems from an arrest on July 30, 2016, where a member of the public sustained serious injuries.
According to the release, the incident began around 8:45 p.m. when an officer followed a car into a parking lot near the 6700 block of Macleod Trail S. and turned on their vehicle’s police lights to indicate a traffic stop.
The driver allegedly stopped his vehicle, got out and ran from the officer. Police said that’s when a foot chase began and other officers arrived and began to help search for the man.
The man was located and taken into custody, however due to several serious injuries sustained during the arrest, the CPS notified the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement.
Video from one of the in-car cameras was reviewed as a part of the investigation into the arrest and injuries, and concerns were raised over the conduct of the officers involved.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation.
In the meantime, two officers from District 6 have been relieved from duty with pay, and two other officers, also from District 6, have been assigned to administrative duties.
The status of the two members who have been relieved of duty will be reviewed in the next seven days.
