Man severely burned in Toronto marijuana dispensary explosion faces arson, drug charges

A 29-year-old Niagara Region man who was severely burned in a midtown Toronto marijuana dispensary explosion last week is now facing arson and drug charges.

Emergency crews responded to a report of an explosion at the Tweeder Medicinal Dispensary at 353 Eglinton Ave. W. around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said the front plate glass window shattered and showered the sidewalk and road with shards of glass.

David Coleman of Smithville, Ont., suffered severe burns to his face and arms was taken to hospital and arrested.

He has been charged with mischief endangering life, arson with disregard for human life, possession of the proceeds of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000 and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

No other injuries were reported and the Toronto police Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear and Explosive response team (CBRNE) conducted an emergency assessment of the scene with the help of firefighters.

Police said the same dispensary was among more than 40 others shut down in Project Claudia raids in May.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and police are continuing their investigation into the explosion, and have yet to release the cause of the blast.
