Moncton’s airport has been christened with a new name — the newly minted Greater Moncton Romeo LeBlanc International Airport will honour former Governor General of Canada, Romeo LeBlanc.
Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced the name change Thursday, calling it a “no-brainer.” The new name goes into effect immediately.
“This is probably the easiest decision, and probably the most pleasant decision that I’ve ever made as minister of transport,” Garneau said.
Fisheries minister, and the late governor general’s son, Dominic LeBlanc was also on hand for announcement and says his family is honoured and grateful for the generous tribute.
“For my father to have imagined that one day somebody as distinguished as Marc Garneau would come to Moncton and pay tribute to him in this way would’ve been very moving,” he said.

LeBlanc, who was born and raised in Mermamcook, New Brunswick, was the 25th governor general of Canada and the first person from the Atlantic region to hold that office.
He died in 2009 at the age of 81.
