Rio 2016: Usain Bolt and Andre De Grasse’s bromance is the best love story of the Olympics

Love has been a reoccurring theme throughout the Rio 2016 games – from podium proposals, to controversial power couples and new friendships fueled by Olympic spirit.

But the budding “bromance” between Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and Canadian Andre De Grasse may be the greatest love story of all, according to the internet.

Social media’s obsession with “De Bolt” (the duo’s new Olympic celebrity couple name, as determined by the internet) peaked Wednesday, after Bolt and De Grasse were seen smiling and joking while crossing the finish line during the men’s 200-metre semi-final.

Of course, like any great sports bromance, competition is fueling this friendship.

You see, De Grasse began to challenge Bolt, who appeared to be slowing down, towards the finish line.

“He asked me why we were running so fast,” De Grasse said. “My coach told me to race him to the line, try and tire him for tomorrow’s final.”

But, as De Grasse closed in, Bolt looked to his right and smiled at the 21-year-old challenger before pulling away for the win.

“He was supposed to slow down,” Bolt said after the race. “I said ‘What are you doing, it’s a semi-final?’ But I think he wanted to push me. I was a bit lazy but I got round.”

It’s clear the internet doesn’t care though, so long as Bolt and De Grasse keep smiling.
