The Special Investigations Unit is probing the death of a 49-year-old man who was struck and killed on the northbound lanes of Highway 400 at Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan early Monday morning.
The SIU said York Regional Police responded to a call in the area around 4 a.m. when the man was hit by a vehicle on the highway.
“They arrived at Major Mackenzie Drive and Highway 400 not long after that call. A short time later, a man was struck in the northbound lanes by a car that was driving northbound,” said SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro.
The highway was closed for several hours during the morning rush hour but reopened just after 9 a.m.
The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault where police were involved.
