A 28-year-old woman is dead and two women were arrested following an alleged assault in Vancouver’s club district early Thursday morning.

Police said the assault happened outside the Caprice Nightclub on Granville Street just before 2 a.m.

Calling the incident a tragic set of circumstances, Vancouver Police Const. Brian Montague said the assault happened on the street after a very brief altercation between the victim and two women inside the club. During the assault, Montague said the victim “went to the ground” and the assault continued until the nightclub staff intervened.

The two suspects then fled the area on foot and about 30 minutes after the assault were located in Gastown and arrested by police.

The 28-year-old victim, who was not known to police, was taken to hospital in critical condition suffering from head injuries. She did not survive her injuries and was pronounced dead late Thursday evening.

The victim and suspects did not know one another, Montague said.

Police said both suspects, who are 25 and 29 years of age, were interviewed and released from custody pending further investigation and results of an autopsy. One suspect is from Vancouver and the other is from a city in B.C., outside the Lower Mainland.

Montague said, although investigators are still working out some of the details on how everything played out in the incident, one suspect was believed to be more of the aggressor.

Charges have not been laid at this time.

The name of the victim, which is Vancouver’s fifth homicide of 2016, has not been released.

The VPD is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident and have not yet spoken to police to call the VPD or CrimeStoppers.
