An Alberta man’s attempt to swim the length of Okanagan Lake has ended prematurely.
Wayne Strach, 61, was hoping to set a World Open Water Swimming Association record for the longest unassisted continuous open water swim by covering a distance of 135 kilometres.
Unassisted includes no drafting behind a boat, no flotation devices and no wet suite.
Strach began the swim Monday from Vernon but had to abandon the attempt after he became separated from his support boat at about 2:45 Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson says once that happened, Strach headed for land.
Last year, Strach became the oldest Canadian to swim the English Channel.
This is the second record swimming attempt in Okanagan Lake in recent weeks.
In late July, triathlete Adam Ellenstein, 39, swam the length of Okanagan Lake non-stop in a little more than 40 hours.
The feat is under review by Guiness Book of World records.
