DUNCAN, B.C. – Ray Zhang isn’t wasting any time establishing roots in his new home.
The businessman from Beijing has become the majority owner of the Cowichan Valley Capitals, a junior A franchise in the British Columbia Hockey League. Ray has plans to relocate his family to Duncan.
“This transaction is the first time someone from China has purchased an overseas hockey franchise,” Ray said on the club’s website. “It will open a door for hockey families in China to learn about Canadian hockey firsthand.
“This link to Canadian hockey will prove valuable to encourage all of our young hockey players in China. The Capitals have a reputation of having the best fans in the league and my family and I look forward to being part of your community.”
Lake Cowichan posted a 27-25-3-3 record last season to finish third in the Island Division before losing to Powell River in the first round of the playoffs.
“Ray is looking forward to working with the local ownership and has ambitious visions for the team,” said head coach Rob Beatty.
