He survived World War II and bombing raids during the nineties, now Mujo the American alligator has been celebrated as the world’s oldest alligator in captivity.
His exact age is unclear, but workers at the Belgrade Zoo said Mujo is at least 80 year old.
He arrived at the zoo from Germany in 1936 – according to staff – and over the years has become a local icon.
Zookeeper Aleksandar Rakocevic described Mujo as “not only the zoo legend but a Belgrade legend”.
The Belgrade Zoo claims that based on information available from other Zoos and animal rights groups – Mujo is the oldest alligator in captivity in the world – after other alligators died in recent years.
Apart from an operation by surgeons to remove his foot after developing gangrene in 2012 – Mujo is said to be in top condition.
