A Michigan man has been charged with murder after a 12-year-old girl, gravely injured in a car accident he was involved with, succumbed to her injuries in hospital last week.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday that Charles James Cahill, Jr., 49, would now face a charge of second-degree murder amongst other charges in relation to the death of Victoria Mack, 12, in car accident last month.

Police say a blood alcohol test showed Cahill was over three times the legal limit to drive, and had 12 previous convictions for driving under the influence.

According to the Sumpter Township Police Department, the accident occurred on July 27, at approximately 8:18 p.m. when a car driven by Cahill rear-ended a minivan while travelling “at a very high rate of speed” northbound Martinsville Rd. near Willis.

The minivan had five occupants according to police, including three children.

“The 12-year-old, who was positioned in the third-row seat, was critically injured and had to be cut from the vehicle by the Sumpter Township Fire Department,” police said in a statement. “She was then flown to Mott Children’s Hospital by Survival Flight.”

Mack was kept on life support for three days before she passed away on July 30.

In addition to the second-degree murder charge, Cahill faces  several charges including operating a vehicle with a high blood alcohol content causing death, operating while intoxicated – third offense and driving with a suspended licence causing death, among other charges.

Mack’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover her funeral and medical expenses. You can donate here.
