A near-miss accident between a recreational boater and a freighter in Burrard Inlet has sparked the Port of Vancouver to remind boaters to use caution.

A video caught the close-call encounter on the evening of June 17 when a boater heading west past the Lions Gate Bridge in Burrard Inlet cut in front of an oncoming freighter.

With the B.C. Day long weekend now beginning, the Port of Vancouver wants boaters to be aware that they must responsibly share the water with the commercial activity in the area.

“All vessels operating within Canada’s waterways are governed by the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and are subject to collision regulations. In addition, Canada’s Criminal Code also applies to boating. These laws ensure the waterways remain safe for all users,” the Port said in a release.

They add that recreational boaters must not obstruct shipping lanes or commercial anchorages, and while in Coal Harbour, must not get in the way of Aircraft Operation Zones and look out for aircraft taking off or landing.

“Never assume that a larger vessel can see you,” says Chris Wellstood, harbour master and director of marine operations and security at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “Preparation and knowledge of safe boating practices and understanding your responsibilities on the water are key to ensuring your outing is enjoyable and safe.”
