Power outages to affect Gimli and surrounding areas over the next three months

Gimli and surrounding areas will be experiencing power outages beginning in July, due to important upgrade work from Manitoba Hydro. File / Global News

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Hydro customers in Gimli and surrounding areas are set to experience power outages lasting up to three hours, beginning in July and lasting up to mid-November.

The reason for the outages stems from ongoing upgrades to hydro’s electrical distribution infrastructure in the region, with voltage levels being increased from 8,000 to 25,000 volts.

According to Manitoba Hydro, “higher voltages allow more electricity to travel on the local network. The upgrade will increase power stability, reducing voltage fluctuation and improving the operation of machinery and electronic equipment connected to the system.”

The areas affected will be the town of Gimli — north of Centre Street to the end of Loni Beach, east of Highway 9 to the lake — as well as areas along P.R. 23 between Highway 9 and Highway 8, including the Vesturland subdivision.

The outages will occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and Manitoba Hydro crews will be placing signs notifying customers of these outages on major roads in the affected areas each morning.
