The Kid is back: Sidney Crosby returns to Cole Harbour for annual hockey school

The second annual Sidney Crosby Hockey School began Monday for lucky boys and girls who travelled from all over the world to meet their idol.

There are 160 kids participating in the camp ranging in age from eight to 12. They are representing all Canadian provinces, more than 20 U.S. states, Norway, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan.

The participants were chosen in a lottery from thousands of applicants to have an opportunity to learn from the Pittsburgh Penguins captain and his coaching team during the four-day camp.

“We’re still pinching ourselves. We can’t believe he got selected for this opportunity,” said Tina Pittsley, a parent from Raleigh, N.C.  “Just talking hockey, getting ready, sharpening the skates, getting the equipment ready. It’s been a lot of excitement at our house.”

Camp activities include on- and off-ice skills development as well as special guest presentations.

“It’s just total excitement for my son,” said parent Steve Cox of Cole Harbour.  “We don’t expect him to become a future NHLer as a result, but we expect him to have lots of fun and be with one of his heroes up close.”

For many parents, having their children learn from one of the best hockey players in the world is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

”We got selected out of all the kids around the world to come to this hockey camp so he’s extremely excited about it. Can’t wait to see his hero,” said Ron Fleurent, who travelled from Biddleford, Maine to watch his stepson participate in the camp.

“He actually got his hair cut and had an 87 carved right in the side of his head and he’s worn 87 on the ice. And actually, he’s named his dog Sidney.”

The camp will run from July 11-14. Proceeds will go towards benefiting various children’s charities through the Sidney Crosby Foundation.

Crosby will be joined by Lord Stanley’s Cup for a parade through the streets of Cole Harbour on Saturday, July 16. The parade will start at Pope John XXIII Church at 35 Colby Dr. at 10:30 a.m.
